These 28 Boston Startups Raised More Than $235M in January

Some 28 Boston startups raised more than $235 million in January. While that's down from the $428 million that was raised in December, December's total was mainly boosted by Ginkgo Bioworks' massive $275 million Series D round.

The startups that raised the largest rounds in January were Paytronix ($65M), True Fit ($55M), Skyword ($25M) and Ellevation Education ($13.9M).

Here are the 28 Boston startups that raised money this month:

• Airing Inc., a Burlington-based startup that is developing a hoseless, maskless micro-CPAP to treat sleep apnea, raised a $1.3 million round from a single investor, according to a new Form D. The company raised nearly $1.9 million from a crowdfunding campaign in 2015.

• Allure Security closed a $5.3 million seed round. The company’s first-ever venture round was led by Boston-based Glasswing Ventures, with the participation of Greycroft, Zetta Venture Partners and Portage Partners. In addition to improving its data loss detection and response platform, Allure will use the money to expand its team with the addition of sales, marketing and engineering professionals. The company will approximately double its current 13-person staff by the end of 2018, Allure CEO Mark Jaffe told me.

• American Robotics, which focuses on agriculture applications, raised $2 million in an equity offering, according to a new Form D.

• AppNeta, a Boston-based provider of end-user experience and network monitoring, received growth equity funding for an undisclosed amount from private equity firm Rubicon Technology Partners.

• Bison, a Boston-based fintech startup, closed a funding round led by FINTOP Capital. Existing investors Hamilton Lane and GrandBanks Capital also participated in the round. The amount was not disclosed.

• BondLink, a Boston-based provider of software for bond issuers, raised a $10 million Series A round led by Franklin Templeton Investments, one of the country's largest municipal bond fund managers.

• Botkeeper, an automated bookkeeping startup, raised a $4.5 million seed round led by Ignition Partners, with participation from the VC firm's managing partner John Connors (who was previously CFO of Microsoft), Talla CEO and co-founder Rob May (whose company is a client), Mat Johnston of 500 Startups and Trevor Kienzle of Correlation Ventures. As part of the round, Ignition principal Kellan Carter and Atlantis Technology CEO Tom Biggins have joined the 40-person company's board, Xconomy reported.

• Centerity received $10 million in funding from Merlin International. The new investment will be used to double the company's R&D center, among other things.

• CoachUp raised a $1.49 million round led by founder Jordan Fliegel, with participation from new and existing investors, according to CEO John Kelley. He told BostInno in an email that the company has continued to grow while improving profitability and that this round is meant to get the company to "sustained" profitability this year.

• Connected2Fiber closed $8 million in additional funding from Ascent Venture Partners, Nauta Capital, NXT Ventures and Osage Venture Partners.

• Ellevation Education, an edtech startup backed by Mark Zuckerberg and Laurene Powell Jobs, raised a $13.9 million round led by Reach Capital.

• FloDesign Sonics raised funding of an undisclosed amount from Dynamk Capital. The company makes acoustic separation technology.

• Fritz closed a $2 million seed funding round led by Eniac Ventures, with participation from Uncork Capital and Hack VC, Xconomy reported. Founded by Jana vets Jameson Toole and Dan Abdinoor, the startup is developing “edge computing” tools for mobile developers.

• Grape Payments raised $100,000, according to a new Form D.

• Indico, a Techstars alum that makes machine learning tools, raised a $4 million seed equity round led by Philadelphia-based Osage Venture Partners, with participation from existing investors .406 Ventures, Boston Seed and Hyperplane.

• InfiniteMD raised a $1.5 million round to build an artificial intelligence engine for providing treatment recommendations for cancer patients.

• Jassby, a new local payments startup, raised a $1.5 million round, according to a new Form D.

• Medumo, a member of the PULSE@MassChallenge accelerator, raised a $2 million round from Cherrystone Angel Group, Launchpad Ventures and Sky Ventures for its patient instruction automation software. The startup is trying to solve the problem of people not following the proper preparation instructions for medical procedures, which can cost hospitals a lot of money.

• OnBoard Security raised almost $1.9 million in an equity offering, according to a new Form D.

• OpenCity, an early-stage startup that provides live chat software for restaurants, raised $820,000 for a debt and security round, which has a target of $1.25 million, according to a new Form D.

• Paytronix Systems, a Newton-based provider of guest engagement analytics software, received a $65 million growth equity investment from Great Hill Partners, Xconomy reported. The company was founded in 2001.

• ProcessUnity, a Concord-based provider of cloud-based governance, risk and compliance software, raised a nearly $500,000 round, according to a new Form D.

• Sheprd, a provider of on-demand school bus services, raised an undisclosed amount of funding from Jaguar Land Rover's venture capital arm, according to Axios.

• Skyword, a provider of content marketing software, raised a $25 million growth equity round from Rho Acceleration, a division of private equity firm Rho Capital Partners that focuses on profitable or near-breakeven ventures. Other current investors include Cox Media Group, Allen & Company, Progress Ventures and American Public Media Group.

• True Fit, a local startup that provides a footwear and apparel personalization software platform for retailers, announced a $55 million Series C round led by Ontario-based growth equity firm Georgian Partners.

• Vicarious Surgical, a stealthy Cambridge-based company that is developing virtual reality applications for surgical procedures, raised a $12.7 million round, according to a new Form D. Adam Sachs, the company's president, did not respond to a request for comment.

• Vionx Energy raised another $5 million in debt and equity, BBJ reported. The battery maker, formerly known as Premium Power, can now count on a total funding of nearly $85 million since 2015.

• Voatz, a Techstars Boston alum, raised a $2.2 million seed round led by Medici Ventures, a subsidiary of Overstock.com that focuses on blockchain investments. Voatz is making a blockchain-powered, mobile-focused voting platform that aims to bring more accessibility and trust to elections.
