It looks like quite a few companies snuck in funding rounds before the end of 2023. Boston-area companies announced $873.4 million in funding last month. That's a big increase over the previous month: By our count, Boston-area companies brought in just $280 million in November. That, however, was a low point from the $1.12 billion companies announced in October and the $1.7 billion they raised in September.

Life sciences
Heranova Lifesciences, which is co-located in Boston and Hong Kong, raised $13.5 million. The company is developing endometriosis tests and therapeutic programs for endometriosis and bacterial vaginosis.
Apollo Therapeutics raised an additional $33.5 million for its Series C financing, bringing the total raised in this round in 2023 to $260M.
Waltham biotech startup Lucy Therapeutics raised $3.45 million as part of a $9 million offering.
OcuTerra Therapeutics, a Boston company developing an eye drop to treat diabetic retinopathy, raised $6.7 million in a $30 million offering.
Cambridge-based Atavistik Bio raised an additional $40 million to advance its cancer drug into the clinic and support its earlier-stage pipeline.
Boston gene therapy startup Envoya Inc. emerged from stealth with $2 million in pre-seed funding.
Bicara Therapeutics, a Boston-based spinout of India's Biocon Ltd., brought in $165 million in a Series C.
Tome Biosciences Inc., led by former Pandion Therapeutics executive Rahul Kakkar, launched with $213 million across Series A and B rounds.
Artbio, a 4-year-old Boston startup, is putting $90 million in fresh funds toward a new type of cancer drug.
Seismic Therapeutic Inc. announced a $121 million Series B, one of the largest venture capital raises of the year amid a tough market for young biotechs.
Software
Paperless Parts, a Boston startup that operates an estimating and quoting platform for job shops and contract manufacturers, raised $5 million in a $15 million equity offering.
Cambridge-based Formless Inc., a decentralized digital rights management company, closed over $2.2 million in pre-seed funding.
Boston cybersecurity company SimSpace closed a $45 million equity raise led by L2 Point Management.
Healthtech
Knownwell, a Boston-based healthcare company that aims to destigmatize healthcare for people with obesity, announced a $20 million Series A fundraising round.
Biorithm, a Cambridge-based women's health medtech, closed $3.5 million in Series A funding co-led by Adaptive Capital Partners and SEEDS Capital.
Myrias Optics, built on research from UMass Amherst on all-inorganic printed meta-optics, secured a $3 million seed investment led by Asia Optical Inc.
Hardware
Verve Motion, a Harvard University spinout, secured $20 million in Series B funding. The Cambridge company is developing exosuits for warehouse and fulfillment center workers to make lifting products easier on their bodies.
Edtech
The Concord-based edtech Sharpen raised $11 million in funding. The round was led by Learn Capital.
Generative AI
The Boston generative AI startup DataCebo launched with $8.5 million in seed funding.
Cleantech/Greentech
Nth Cycle, a critical metals refining company, closed $37 million in Series B and an additional $7 million in non-dilutive financing.
Chelmsford-based AM Batteries closed a $30 million Series B led by Toyota Ventures.
