Talk about a jump! March saw nearly twice as many venture capital dollars flowing into Massachusetts companies as February. By our count, Boston-area companies raised $788.9 million this month, up significantly from our February tally, which counted $410 million raised.
Biotech companies accounted for the lion’s share of the capital raised in March, but there was a flurry of activity across a number of industries.

Health tech
Dental AI startup Overjet raised $53.2 million in a Series C round, bringing the company’s total funding to $133 million.
InStride Health, a mental health startup launched by a McLean Hospital psychiatrist and psychologist closed a $30 million Series B round.
Biotech
Sionna Therapeutics, a Waltham startup developing new treatments for cystic fibrosis, raised what appears to be the largest Series C of the year so far. The firm announced a $182 million round at the start of the month.
Clasp Therapeutics launched with a $150 million Series A round.
Portal Biotechnologies, a new venture by the founder of SQZ Technologies, raised $5 million in pre-seed funding.
Nocion Therapeutics closed a $62 million Series B round.
Cambridge biotech FogPharma closed a rare Series E Round of $145 million.
Fintech
Boston firm FunGuard raised $100 million in a Series C round.
Engineering
Fluent Metal launched with $3.2 million in recent funding. The company’s co-founder and CEO, Peter Schmitt, was previously a chief designer at Desktop Metal.
MIT spinout Allium Engineering raised a $3.25 million seed round to scale up manufacturing and make plans for a Boston facility.
Software
DBOS Inc., raised $8.5M in seed funding. The firm developing a new kind of operating system was co-founded by some of the most well-known people in the computer science world, including serial tech startup mogul Michael Stonebraker and Databricks co-founder and CTO Matei Zaharia.
Boston-based cybersecurity and cyber risk firm CyberSaint closed a $21 million Series A, led by Riverside Acceleration Capital.
Boston-based data firm Metaplane raised $13.8 million in a Series A round, which it will use to build out its data quality monitoring system.
Ediphi raised $12 million in a Series A round to grow its market share.
