If you work in downtown Boston, you may have seen a large RV parked outside with the name of its owner, "2020 On-site Optometry," painted on the side. Since 2014, this Boston-based startup has performed over 10,000 eye exams within one of these "mobile vision centers" (MVCs) for more than 230 corporations, including rather large ones like iRobot and Pfizer.
With vision care becoming an increasingly important part of corporate wellness plans, the PayPal Start Tank alum announced on Monday that it recently raised $3 million from investors to expand beyond Boston and Atlanta into Chicago this fall and improve the overall customer experience. This round is an extension to its Series A-1 funding, bringing total money raised to $7.9 million.
"This round will fuel our expansion, help us take the patient experience to the next level, and drive greater access to high-quality, convenient vision care across the country," CEO Howard Bornstein said in a statement.
Investors in this round include Lee Linden, former head of commerce at Facebook; John Connolly, senior advisor at Bain Capital Ventures; RoAnn Costin, board member at Lululemon Athletica; Mark Nunnelly, former managing director of Bain Capital; and Andrew Balson, CEO of Match Beyond.
"2020 has solved a problem for companies and their employees by providing high-quality optometry in a convenient and low-cost setting," Balson said in a statement. "We will see more MVCs parked at companies and more eyes cared for as the 2020 team grows their presence. This is investing in a company that will do well by doing good."
2020 On-site has grown from one full-time employee in 2014 to 26 now and plans to grow its team "rapidly."
