New Money: Accion Systems Lists Nest Investor as Director, New Startup Raises $$

Accion Systems, Boston

  • Amount: $6 million
  • Investors: The Form D lists seven unnamed investors.
  • Details: Accion Systems is a space propulsion startup that in February started accepting orders for its micro-propulsion systems designed for small satellites, according to TechCrunch. The startup, led by CEO and co-founder Dr. Natayla Brikner, had previously raised a $2 million seed round in January 2015 led by Peter Thiel's FF Science, with participation from RRE Ventures, Founder Collective, SDF Ventures, Galvanize Ventures, Samuel Lessin, Slow Ventures, Tim Tokarsky, Rene Reinsberg, Marek Oszlewski, GettyLab and TechU Angels. It was also rewarded a $3 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defence last year. The new Form D indicates the startup is looking to raise a total of $7.5 million for this round, and it lists Shasta Ventures Managing Director Rob Coneybeer as a director.

Spotted Media, Boston

  • Amount: $1.75 million
  • Investors: The Form D lists 15 unnamed investors.
  • Details: Spotted Media is a new startup that describes itself as an "advertising platform for candid celebrity endorsement," according to its AngelList page. The startup's CEO is Janet Comenos, who previously worked at Promoboxx for four years and most recently served as its SVP of sales, according to her LinkedIn. Wiggio CEO and founder Dana Lampert and Schooner Capital Managing Director Ted Henderson are listed as directors on the Form D.

Pwnie Express, Boston

  • Amount: $12.9 million Series B
  • Investors: Led by Ascent Venture Partners, with participation from new investor MassMutual Ventures and existing investors .406 Ventures, Fairhaven Capital and the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies.
  • Details: Pwnie Express is an Internet-of-Things security company helps protects organizations from security threats coming through connected devices through its Pulse software-as-a-service platform. In addition to the funding, the company also announced the appointment of three new executives: CFO Kasha Gauthier, who was previously at EMC's RSA division; VP of sales and services Bo Thurmond, who was previously at Digital Lumens; and VP of marketing Dimitri Vlachos, who was previously at ObserveIT. Pwnie Express CEO Paul Paget said sales tripled in Q1 from the same quarter last year, and that it has reached over 100 customers.
