6 River Systems (Cambridge)

  • Amount: $6 million seed round
  • Investors: Led by Seth Winterroth of early-stage venture fund Eclipse, with participation from iRobot.
  • Details: 6 River Systems aims to "redefine fulfillment automation for e-commerce and retail operations," and it was founded by  Christopher Cacioppo, Jerome Dubois and Rylan Hamilton—the latter two of which were formerly executives at Kiva Systems, a Boston robotics startup that was acquired by Amazon in 2012 for $775 million. Lior Susan, Eclipse founder and general partner, has joined the startup's board of directors. "The acquisition of Kiva left a void in this space that has yet to be filled. This, coupled with rapid growth in e-commerce globally, has resulted in a need for next-gen automation tools," Winterotth said. "We are pleased to be partnering with a world-class team that has significant experience implementing supply-chain solutions that enhance fulfillment operations."

Kuvée (Boston)

  • Amount: $6 million
  • Investors: Founder Collective, General Catalyst Partners, Bolt and a number of angel investors, including Kayak and Lola Travel co-founder Paul English.
  • Details: Kuvée has developed a smart wine bottle that promises to keep your wine fresh for 30 days. It also has an Internet-connected, touch-screen interface you can order wine from. The startup is currently raising money through an Indiegogo campaign for the first batch of products, available in Massachusetts and California this fall.
