New Money: Techstars Alum Raises $2.2M to Fight Phishing Attacks

GreatHorn (Belmont)

  • Amount: $2.25 million seed
  • Investors: Led by ff Venture Capital and SoftTech VC, with participation from Techstars Ventures, RRE and Walter Winshall, along with existing investors Zelkova Ventures and V1.VC.
  • Details: GreatHorn, a 2015 Techstars NYC alum, considers itself the "world's first truly cloud native communication security platform," and it helps organizations detect "advanced spear phishing attacks that email security gateways, cloud access security brokers and traditional anti-spam/anti-virus tools miss." The new funding will be used to expand existing and new product lines, along with growing its operations in the U.S. and accelerating its sales and marketing efforts across the world. "We are excited by the unique, data-driven approach that the GreatHorn team has taken to solving the increasingly pervasive problems surrounding cybersecurity, especially for companies embracing cloud communication technologies," John Frankel, partner at ff Venture Capital, said in a statement.

Mylestoned (Boston)

  • Amount: $1.5 million seed
  • Investors: Founder Collective, Boston Seed Capital, Converge Venture Partners, Joe Caruso
  • Details: Software for easily storing memories of loved ones.

Tinkergarten (Northampton and Brooklyn)

  • Amount: $1.6 million seed
  • Investors: Led by Omidyar Network, which is owned by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. Other investors included Blue {Seed} Collective, City Light Capital, 500 Startups and Outbound Ventures.
  • Details: Tinkergarten is an edtech startup that has developed a platform for recruiting, training and deploying teaching staff who lead play- and research-based classes for young children. The startup recently reached 100 "leaders"—what it calls its teaching staff—across classes in 14 states. Its early childhood education platform has been rolled out into New York, San Francisco, Boston and Los Angeles, among several other markets. "Tinkergarten is addressing the large social issue of quality in early childhood education through an innovative business model and a strong founding team," Isabelle Hau, venture partner at Omidyar Network, said. "We are particularly excited about Tinkergarten's flexible workforce model that attracts entrepreneurial people and empowers them as leaders to deliver positive outcomes for children and families." CEO and co-founder Brian Fitzgerald is based in Northamption.

Maxwell Health (Boston)

  • Amount: $22 million Series C round
  • Investors: New backers: GIS Strategic Ventures (an arm of Guardian Life Insurance Company of America), Sun Life Financial, Cendana Capital. Existing backers: Adams Street Partners, Cambia Health Solutions, Catalyst Health Ventures, Industry Ventures, Lerer Ventures, Schooner Capital, Tribeca Venture Partners and Vaizra Investments
  • Details: The funding will go toward continuing to develop its Maxwell Health's software and expanding its business, which is focused on bringing technology to the benefits process—such as online enrollment and an app for using your benefits. The company also offers a concierge service for health care—to help users understand their benefits—that normally only a large company would provide access to.
