This Mass.-Based 'Keurig for Weed' Is out Raising $$

Marijuana

Get this: There's a startup called CannaKorp that's been dubbed the "Keurig for marijuana," and it's based in—wait for it—Stoneham, Mass. Which is practically Stonedham. (I'll be here all night.)

In all seriousness, what's also interesting about the company is that its CEO is Dave Manly, who was previously a senior VP at Keurig Green Mountain ($GMCR). The K-Cup maker is based in Waterbury, Vt., and also operates a brewer R&D center in Burlington, Mass.

CannaKorp, meanwhile, is developing something similar to Keurig's K-Cups, but for medicinal marijuana—called CannaCups. The cups will be used with the CannaCloud, which the company says is the "world's first single-use, pod-based cannabis vaporizer system."

The company has also been out raising some funding to support its efforts. CannaKorp disclosed in a Jan. 11 SEC filing that it has raised $125,000 in new debt funding, which brought the round—which was initially disclosed in October 2014—to a total of $375,000 so far. The total offering amount in the round is $1 million, according to the filings.

CannaKorp states on its website, "we are currently in our seed round and are seeking additional investors and partners who share our vision to be the market leader in providing medical marijuana users the ultimate in quality, convenience and consistency."

In an interview with Tech Insider, Manly described the thinking behind the CannaCloud:

"Keurig has standards for what coffee went into their K-Cups. It was very consistent from cup-to-cup, so every time you had a K-Cup from a Keurig machine, it tasted the same," Manly says. "That kind of consistency is exactly what we want to bring to the marijuana industry."

CannaCups will have different kinds of marijuana strains and strengths, and users will eventually be able to them through a subscription service on the startup's website, according to Tech Insider.
