New Money: Outlearn Gets $2M, Squadle Raises $1M, Ourglass Gets $1.6M

Outlearn (Boston)
  • Amount: $2 million seed round
  • Investors: General Catalyst Partners, former Akamai CEO Paul Sagan
  • Details: Outlearn offers cloud software for curating training content relevant to developers. The site lets users curate and publish “online learning paths”—links to learning content (videos, PDFs, Google Docs, Web articles etc.) that can be organized however you choose. The founders are Jeff Whatcott, formerly the CMO of Brightcove, and Will Koffel, who was part of the founding engineering team at Akamai.
Squadle (Cambridge)
  • Amount: $1 million seed round
  • Investors: Jennifer Lum, BOSS Syndicate, Bolt, Joe Caruso, Blue Tiger Ventures, Neil Kataria
  • Details: The startup has developed sensors and cloud-based technology for reducing the effort associated with managing compliance data. Restaurant chains including Dunkin’ Donuts, Sonic Drive-In and Chick-fil-A are among the users so far, as is the Hyatt hotel chain.
Ourglass (Boston)
  • Amount: $1.6M seed round, according to a press release.
  • Investors: Round led by General Catalyst Partners. Other investors not identified.
  • Details: The Boston startup is developing a social network app for privacy-minded people, letting them share their daily experiences with up to 12 friends. "The app gives users the freedom to post stories of their day, free from prying eyes and competition for likes. We provide an intimate space for people to share their life, in an authentic way, with those they're closest to," CEO Eric Adams said in a statement. The Ourglass app is available on the Apple Store.
Harvest Power (Waltham)
  • Amount: $4.9M in debt, according to a Form D filing.
  • Investors: Four undisclosed investors.
  • Details: Founded in 2008, the Waltham startup produces renewable energy and soil enhancement products using its organics management system. It has attracted tens of millions of dollars in investment, including a $20M Series D round last October.
Vee24 (Cambridge)
  • Amount: $8.8M in equity, according to a Form D filing.
  • Investors: Five undisclosed investors.
  • Details: The live video assistance startup was founded in Manchester, England, in 2011, but its headquarters has been located in Cambridge for a few years now. Audi, Land Rover, L'Oreal, Samsung and Lexus are counted as some of its largest customers, according to its website.
Redox (Madison, Wisc.); local investors
  • Amount: $3.5M Series A
  • Investors: .406 Ventures of Boston led the round, and Boston-based Flybridge Capital Partners participated. Also taking part was HealthX Ventures.
  • Details: Redox has developed a platform that "allows any software system to easily and securely share data with electronic health records," according to a news release. Liam Donohue of .406 has joined the Redox board in connection with the deal.
Eastward Capital Partners (West Newton)
  • Amount: $17M in pooled investment fund interests, according to a Form D filing.
  • Investor: Eighteen undisclosed investors.
  • Details: Eastward Capital Partners is a venture debt firm that has invested in more than 55 companies, including Westborough, Mass.-based data storage startup SimpliVity. The Form D filing shows that the firm is seeking to raise an additional $133M for this fund, which would bring the total to $150M.
Elephant Fund I (Boston)

Back in March, we learned Andy Hunt and Jeremiah Daly were leaving Highland Capital Partners to work on raising a $125 million first fund for Elephant Partners. The new VC firm has just filed docs indicating it's closed the fund at $138.3 million. Hunt is a co-founder at Warby Parker. At Highland, Daly worked on investments in Aereo and HourlyNerd; before that, at Accel, he worked on that firm's investment in SimpliVity. The Form D lists a Boston address, but it may be the new firm's lawyer's address. It's not clear where Elephant will be based.

Digital Immunity (Marlborough)
  • Amount: $150,000 in debt, according to a Form D filing.
  • Investor: Three undisclosed investors.
  • Details: Founded this year by former Snappii CEO John Murgo, Digital Immunity touts itself as a provider for "next generation endpoint security," according to its LinkedIn page. The Form D filing shows that Digital Immunity is looking to raise an additional $350,000 for this round. On the startup's website, it says using its platform, Digital Immunity creates a "digital DNA map of all applications that are allowed to run on an endpoint," preventing "the execution of any malicious code, or any code, that does not have a verified map."
