3D Firm Paracosm Has Raised $3.3M Led by Atlas and Opened a Cambridge Office

The CEO of a Florida 3D software startup, Paracosm, has relocated to Cambridge and plans to add more staff in the area after closing $3.3 million in seed funding led by Atlas Venture.

Amir Rubin, CEO and co-founder of Gainesville, Fla.-based Paracosm, is now working out of Atlas Venture in Cambridge following the funding. In an email, Rubin said of his hiring plans: "We are focusing on adding operations and biz dev team members in Cambridge, but I'm also excited to get involved with all the amazing engineering schools in the area."

Paracosm says it’s on a “mission to 3D-ify the world” — through software that reconstructs physical spaces as digital models.

The models can serve as blueprints for giving robots and software applications more awareness of the physical world. Rubin said in a news release:

Paracosm wants to take the digital world beyond screens and enable machines to understand the world as we do. We envision a future where the digital world is seamlessly integrated into our lives. When humans and machines have a joint understanding of our world it opens up endless opportunities. Imagine a robot that can find your keys or deliver a pizza directly to a desk in a busy office building. Imagine building a video game level out of the furniture in your living room or playing an augmented reality game in which zombies chase you around your own home. Allowing machines to understand the physical realm will change the world.

The seed round was led for Atlas by partner Jeff Fagnan. Other investors in the round included iRobot, the Bedford, Mass.-based maker of the Roomba and other home robots, along with Osage University Partners, BOLDstart Ventures, New World Angels, Deep Fork Capital and a number of angel investors.
