Bedford, Mass.-based big data company VoltDB has raised $8 million in Series B funding. The round was led by an unnamed “Silicon Valley luminary,” with participation from two independent investors and existing stakeholders Sigma Partners and Kepha Partners. The fresh capital will go towards boosting sales and marketing, as well as supporting the company’s "smart" application technology, powered by big data and inspired by the Internet of Things.
VoltDB claims to have more than 400 commercial customers employing its database architecture to power everything from enterprise applications, transportation systems, electricity management and mobile and advertising networks.
The company, founded in 2009 by MIT professor Michael Stonebraker, has raised around $18.5 million in total. Stonebraker, who is known as one of the forefathers of big data, is still an advisor at the firm, and was also involved in laying the foundations of five other tech firms in the field, including Vertica, Streambase and Ingres.
In addition to its headquarters in Bedford, VoltDB also holds an office in Santa Clara, Calif.
