Lexington, Mass.-based ownCloud announced it has raised $6.3 million in a Series A round, led by General Catalyst Partners with participation from Boston-based Devonshire Investors, reports the Boston Business Journal.
The company, which provides a commercial open-source file syncing and sharing platform to more than one million users globally, will put the funding towards growing marketing, sales and product in the states and Europe.
For companies concerned about their data getting compromised as a result of using DropBox, ownCloud claims it offers a more secure alternative.
Since its start in 2011, the startup has raised around $14 million in financing. ownCloud employs 14, and has plans to hire eight more in 2014.
