General Assembly Raises $35M to Fuel the Expansion of its Skills-Based School

As competency-based training continues to gain swift traction, so, too, does General Assembly. The education firm announced Friday it has raised more than $35 million, to further "expand into an academy for coders, designers and marketers," according to the New York Times.

The newfound financing was led by Institutional Venture Partners, which will gain a seat on General Assembly's board. GSV Capital and Western Technology Investment also participated in the round.

General Assembly currently offers courses ranging from Web development and data science to product management and digital marketing. Designed to equip individuals with the "most relevant skills of the 21st century," General Assembly educates on technology, business and design at nine campuses across four continents.

The New York City-founded startup school of sorts first moved to the city in 2012, yet recently moved from Cambridge to WeWork's newly-opened, beautifully-designed co-working space in the Innovation District at 51 Melcher Street.

Since opening its doors three years ago, General Assembly has grown to more than 100,000 students. This latest round of financing is intended to help bolster that number, allowing the institute to build additional campuses and embark on new teaching initiatives.

“We’ve always had a big vision of General Assembly,” said Jake Schwartz, General Assembly co-founder and CEO, to the New York Times. “We’ll hopefully be around for the next 50 to 75 years, if not longer.”

This round brings General Assembly's total amount raised to $49.3 million.
