Techstars Boston Grad Sync OnSet Secures $2.5M to Save TV & Film Crews Hours of Prep Work

Upon graduating from Techstars Boston in 2012, Wymsee had inked deals with major TV production crews. Now, however, just over one year later, the startup behind Sync OnSet has accumulated hundreds of clients, and an even bigger pool of funding.

The company announced Monday it has closed $2.5 million from Laconia Ventures, Rose Park Advisors, CommonAngels and Hub Angels. The newfound financing is part of the startup's seed round, according to PandoDaily — a $750,000 convertible note raised from an unnamed, but "awesome" group of angel investors after graduating from the accelerator.

The Sync OnSet app is designed to save TV and film crews hours of prep work by providing a mobile "production binder."

Currently, crews carry around a physical binder, brimming with handwritten notes, photos and other necessary scraps of paper prone to getting lost. If one does, however, the continuity of a film could be thrown off. Suddenly, the protagonist is wearing a wedding ring on the wrong hand, or sporting unruly facial hair entirely unexpected from the well-coiffed character.

Sync OnSet allows costume departments to more easily track these notes, as well as better manage the approval process, more efficiently keep track of their budgeting and quickly snap and share photos instantly during a shoot. What's more, the app's security has been proven to ensure nothing can be hacked and leaked prior to a movie's debut. HBO has given the team its (security) stamp of approval.

During the Fall 2012 Techstars Demo Day, the team quoted a client from "30 Rock" as saying, "You don't know what you've done, you've changed our industry forever." Considering two-thirds of company's clients are paying $500 per department per month to use Sync OnSet, according to PandoDaily, the comment couldn't have been far off.

Sync OnSet currently employs 10 people, including a sales team in Los Angeles and a development team in Cambridge.
