Billerica-based Playrific today announced a new $1.7 million round, "from a collection of angel investing groups including Golden Seeds, Launchpad Venture Group, and Walnut Angels," Boston.com reports.
Founded by local industry veteran Beth Marcus, the website and mobile app aggregate digital content appropriately tailored to children's tastes and preferences, creating what the company calls "screen time parents can feel good about." There is also a version for educational purposes, helping teachers sync technology with their classroom goals.
Here's how the technology works. Once you register for a free account, the Playrific "team of educators, experts and algorithms find and curate games, videos and books from across the web that match your child's interests. Your account is then regularly refreshed based on your child's browsing history (likes and dislikes) as well as the viewing habits and trends of children with similar tastes."
Marcus made our list of Boston's 71 Female Entrepreneurs back in October. And with good reason--she seems to be approaching a popular and hotly contested market--the education of our youth in a digital world--in a refreshingly unique way.
To date, Playrific has raised $2.8 million in total funding.
