Harvard Undergraduate Women in Business Help Students Win $1,000 for Their Social Enterprise Plan

The Harvard Undergraduate Women in Business (HUWIB) is currently hosting their third annual Business for Good Competition. Sponsored by Northern Trust, the 2011 Business for Good Winner will receive a $1,000 stipend and will be given the opportunity to present the team’s idea to the attendees of the seventh annual Intercollegiate Business Convention being held at the Westin Boston Waterfront on October 29.

The competition seeks to reward innovative, meaningful social enterprise among college students, all while facilitating creativity and collaboration among entrepreneurs and increasing the visibility of social entrepreneurs in the community. HUWIB hopes to inspire college students to enter into social entrepreneurship as they move toward graduation and a life post Harvard.

Teams of up to five people -- that must be at least 50 percent female -- can apply by Saturday, October 1, in order to receive feedback and mentoring. The final competition deadline is October 15, and all finalists will get the chance to pitch their ideas to a panel of expert judges at the IBC.

Last year, more than 1,000 people attended the IBC, allowing students to network with high-profile industry professionals. This year, Sallie Krawcheck, president of Bank of America’s Global Wealth and Investment Management Unit, and fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg will be in attendance. The one-day conference presents over 30 workshops and panels created to introduce participants to the many opportunities that exist in business, in hopes of inspiring women to pursue their career goals.

For undergraduates, practice interviews and résumé reviews will be included in the event. For alumni, there’s also a rewarding agenda lined up. Alumni will be able to meet the IBC speakers, network and catch up with their peers, all while giving their advice to current students through the mock interviews.
