South Texas Drilling Roundup: Denver company looks to drill in Webb County

In total, 25 companies in the Business Journal's 67-county area filed 62 new drilling permit applications with the Texas Railroad Commission in the past week.

The South Texas Drilling Roundup is a weekly review of drilling permit applications filed with the Railroad Commission of Texas over a 67-county area of South Texas.

Webb County led the way last week in the number of drilling permit applications filed with the Texas Railroad Commission, with 15 applications.

Denver, Colorado-based SM Energy Company filed seven drilling permit applications for new oil or gas wells in Webb County. Two are slated for the Eagle Ford Shale 23.4 miles southwest of Catarina and will have total depths of 7,700 feet. SM Energy is also poised to drill five new oil and gas wells in the Austin Chalk 23.4 miles northwest of nearby Las Tiendas, each with a total depth of 7,300 feet.

La Salle County also saw a flurry of activity this week as Houston-headquartered Verdun Oil & Gas LLC applied with the Railroad Commission for permits to drill seven new oil or gas wells in the Eagle Ford Shale. All seven will be located 5.8 miles northeast of the nearby town of Los Angeles, each with a total depth of 9,500 feet.

In total, 25 companies filed 62 new permit applications.
