VC funding update: Boston startups and tech firms raised $347 million in August

Welcome back to our monthly roundup of the venture capital scene in Boston. As the summer is slowing down and coming to a close so are VC dollars. In July, the cumulative VC funding for Boston area startups was $744.4 million. In August, most of the $347 million went to biotechnology companies, with some money finding its way toward computing and clean energy systems.

  • London-based nutrition company Zoe Ltd. is looking to expand to the Bay State and the U.S. after extending its Series B round by $15M.
  • Airna, a biotech developing RNA-editing treatments, has raised a $60M financing round, bringing its total Series A funding to $90M.
  • Adept Materials, a Somerville-based advanced materials startup, announced the closing of its $4M seed round. 
  • Riverlane, a British quantum computing lab with offices in Cambridge, U.K. and Cambridge, Mass. raised $75M in series C funding.
  • Cala Systems raised $5.6 million in seed round funding led by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) and Clean Energy Venture Group. 
  • Sora Fuel, a Cambridge-based aviation fuel startup, received $6 million in seed funding, led by Engine Ventures.
  • Palantir and Lockheed Martin alums raised $2M and launched their new startup, Pryzm.
  • Kano Therapeutics secured an oversubscribed $5 million seed round co-led by Engine Ventures and VSquared Ventures.
  • IDRx Inc. completed a $120 million Series B financing led by RA Capital Management, Commodore Capital and Blackstone Multi-Asset Investing.
  • Red Queen Therapeutics is funded with a $55 million Series A commitment from Apple Tree
