3 Trends Making DC an Innovation Leader

Washington, D.C. is a fast-growing hub for innovation and startups and some of the best and brightest thought leaders in the area will be on hand to discuss why at State of Innovation, DC Inno's annual interactive conference on May 6 from 4:15 to 8:00 p.m. at Artisphere. During the National Impact, Local Progress panel, the subject will be the national trends impacting the local innovation scene and what they mean for helping D.C. stand out. Here are three trends we think push D.C. to the forefront.

1. Education Everywhere

The D.C. area is full of colleges and universities, some of the best in the country. All of them are churning out graduates every year with an interest in science, technology and business, and plenty of those graduates stick around to work at startups and larger tech companies, or to found their own. It's not just coding and programming either. Business administration, marketing, regulatory law and more are all increasingly part of the curriculum, not to mention all of the opprotunities for internships and fellowships in the area.

2. Government Agencies Want to Work With Startups

As the headquarters of so many federal agencies are based around D.C., it's not too surprising that there are many opportunities to work with them that outstrip the rest of the country. You can see the way that companies large and small take advantage of that, with incubators and accelerators aimed specifically at startups that want to work for the government. Larger companies are partnering with those startups that already have relationships with the governmnet, that's when they don't just acquire them outright.

3. President Obama's Innovation Mission

The president's efforts to build links between the White House and the tech community are wide-ranging and having an impact on all kinds of levels. Silicon Valley is paying attention to D.C. like never before, partly because of how the president keeps hiring some of their most respected community members to help run the tech side of his administration and partly just because tech policy is more and more at the front of the government's agenda. But bringing Silicon Valley to D.C. doesn't mean they are isolated in the White House and plenty of local companies are getting in on the opportunities offered by the increased interest in how technology can improve government systems and help them reach their goals.
