Ohio among the nation's most innovative states

A new study of U.S. patent data shows the Buckeye State ranks among the nation's most innovative.

Ohio ranked No. 8 in the nation based on its total number of filed and granted patents since 1975, with 127,347 total patents, according to a new analysis by Commercial Cafe. In 2019, the state received 208 patents, the analysis found.

Other states included in the top ten are:

  1. California: 731,705
  2. New York: 385,138
  3. Texas: 213,583
  4. Illinois: 184,166
  5. New Jersey: 161,218
  6. Michigan: 159,257
  7. Massachusetts: 148,944
  8. Ohio: 127,347
  9. Pennsylvania: 110,339
  10. Connecticut: 101,438

Ohio's most prolific inventor is Frederick Shelton, who boasts more than 1,000 patents, according to Commercial Cafe. Shelton is an engineering fellow with Ethicon, a Johnson & Johnson medical devices company that's based in Cincinnati.
