Artificial intelligence tools may one day transform the logistics industry, but a new report indicates less than one-fourth of supply-chain businesses integrate AI into their operations.

The report was prepared by Inspectorio, a supply chain management software developer based in Minneapolis, which gathered data from 144 respondents from various industries.

The recently published State of the Supply Chain report showed that 77% of respondents indicated that AI is not yet integrated into their supply chains.

The lack of adoption isn't from skepticism: The same survey found that 82% of supply-chain industry professionals believe AI will significantly impact the field in the next five years.

Instead, nearly half of respondents cited the current lack of AI-powered tools as the primary barrier. Twenty-two percent of respondents cited restrictive IT policies as the second-largest barrier to adopting AI tools.

“The current lack of AI adoption throughout operations highlights the need for tailored solutions to create an effective roadmap to navigate a dynamic and evolving supply chain," said Chirag Patel, CEO of Inspectorio, in a press release.

Additionally, the report looked into sustainability practices within the industry. The report found that a fourth of respondents felt that sustainability would provide a "pivotal area for future innovation," however, current technologies have not been adopted broadly in the industry.

The report also noted that technology is also enabling companies to manage risk through supplier diversification.
