Sezzle, a local financial-technology startup that makes it easier for consumers to pay for online purchases in installments, announced Wednesday that it will establish a new Canadian headquarters in Toronto.
Payments and technology veteran Patrick Chan, a Toronto native, will lead the company's efforts in Canada. Prior to joining the company, Chan held senior roles at Salesforce, PayPal and SAP Qualtrics.
"We are very pleased to welcome Patrick Chan to the Sezzle team," CEO Charlie Youakim said in a statement. "He is a marquee talent who brings years of relevant experience in the payments and broader e-commerce space, knows the Canadian market extremely well, and understands our corporate culture, which is based on financial empowerment, transparency and stakeholder collaboration."
Sezzle's Canadian headquarters will be located in Toronto's downtown financial district. In the coming months, the company plans to make "a number of key hires to staff up its Canadian team," but did not specify how many.
News of Minneapolis-based Sezzle's international expansion comes about six months after the company entered the Canadian market for the first time. The fintech startup launched in the country through a partnership with Italian sportswear brand Kappa.
Around the same time, Sezzle made its debut on the Australian stock exchange, raising around $30 million.
