Minnesota's Major Tech and Startup Fundings in January

Minnesota startups seem to be off to a sleepy start for venture capital in 2019. But that doesn't mean things will stay that way. Last year began in a similar fashion, but by the end of 2018, startups across the country (including Minnesota) raised a record amount of venture capital, according to Pitchbook.

FUNDINGS

Apruve

  • Apruve, a Minneapolis-based financial-technology startup that makes software for B2B credit management, closed on $6 million in funding to grow its team.

Monteris Medical

  • Monteris Medical, which makes laser technology that destroys tumors, has secured $10.7 million in a planned $17 million round of equity financing.

EXITS & ACQUISITIONS

CoreBiome

  • CoreBiome, a medical startup that utilizes University of Minnesota research to analyze tiny organisms, was acquired by OraSure Technologies. Details of the acquisition were not disclosed. CoreBiome assists researchers studying microorganisms that live in shared environments like the human gut. The company's customers include agriculture businesses and pharmaceutical companies.

Tech Dump

  • Twin Cities electronic waste recycler Tech Dump expanded its footprint nationally with the acquisition of Scrubb.IT, a St. Paul-based mail-in electronics recycling program.

HomeSpotter

  • Real estate tech startup HomeSpotter completed its first acquisition this month, snapping up a Canadian company that makes digital tools used by real estate agents for open houses. Minneapolis-based HomeSpotter didn't disclose terms of its deal to buy Spacio, whose mobile app serves as an alternative to the paper sign-in sheets realtors often use to collect contact information from people touring open houses.
