The Nerdery, a consultancy and software development firm, has shuttered its Kansas City office and eliminated 32 total positions across the business, the company said in a statement Wednesday.

Prior to the cuts, Nerdery's Kansas City office had 28 employees, about a half-dozen of which have been asked to stay on as part of the company's work-from-home team. Six positions were eliminated from Nerdery's Bloomington office, three from its Chicago office and one from its work-from-home program. The company's Phoenix office was not affected.

Mark Malmberg, A spokesperson for Nerdery, declined to name the specific roles that were cut, but said that they were "eliminated primarily based on low utilization and business needs."

He added that the cuts were made with the intent of freeing up resources to invest in new service offerings and additional talent – much of which will be in the Twin Cities.

This is Nerdery's second round of job cuts within two years. In June 2017, the company eliminated about four percent of its workforce (21 positions, primarily from its Bloomington office) as part of a restructuring that largely targeted middle-management roles.

"Coming off another profitable year, we make these moves from a place of strength and choice," Nerdery CEO Adrian Slobin said in a statement.

Slobin was promoted to CEO in July 2018, around a year after Nerdery's former CEO, Tom O'Neill, stepped down from the position.

Slobin added that Nerdery will be adding talent in the areas of data science, cloud, systems architecture, platform modernization, experience design and more. The company will also be looking to add three C-level positions: chief technology officer, chief revenue officer and chief human resources officer. The company's current headcount now stands at 312.

"While it is hard to say goodbye to our colleagues, I am confident that these changes will strengthen our focus an improve our growth potential for the future – which will ultimately lead to new clients and new opportunities," Slobin said.
