MyMeds, a health-tech startup that helps users adhere to their medication-taking regimens, has teamed up with Mayo Clinic to further educate its users about the meds that they take, the company announced Thursday.

Through MyMeds platform, called ACE, the company aims to tackle "medication non-adherence," the term for when patients don't take their medications properly. MyMeds believes that medication non-adherence is one of the costliest healthcare challenges plaguing employers, health plans and health systems across the country.

Now that MyMeds has partnered with Mayo Clinic, ACE users will be able to access Mayo Clinic's medication information through the platform.

"Reaching individuals with timely, accurate medication information helps support their overall care," Susan Westcott, Mayo Clinic's senior director of pharmacy-managed care, said in a release. "Working with MyMeds is another way Mayo Clinic is able to share its knowledge and expertise with others to support medication adherence and clinical outcomes."

Minneapolis-based MyMeds helps patients track their medication-taking behaviors, while learning why they take their meds – and what could happen if they don't. The company also provides clinicians with real-time adherence data to target the patients that need help, reducing costs and improving care outcomes.

Mayo Clinic has always been a key hub for medical innovation, but only in recent years has the medical giant become increasingly connected and invested in health-tech startups.

Mayo Clinic has benefited from upping its startup game. In 2017, its venture arm generated record revenue, climbing to $66 million, up from $35 million the year before. Mayo was also an active venture capital investor last year, investing in companies like Evelo Biosciences, which aims to turn live bacteria into treatments for cancer and immune diseases.
