The Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship has named the first female president in its 35-year history.

Lisa Hazlett has been promoted to the role of president at Nussbaum. She has been with the organization since 2018, first working as director of communications and then as vice president.

The promotion comes at a crucial time for Nussbaum – one of the largest innovation advocacy organizations in the Triad, helping 77 startups in the past year – as it begins and continues fundraising for the redevelopment of the former Carolina Steel headquarters and manufacturing plant that will cost approximately $38 million and will create or retain 600 jobs. The Steelhouse, next to the Nussbaum Center, envisions mixed-use spaces such a manufacturing center, retail and office space and a year-round farmers’ market.

Hazlett has been instrumental in the Steelhouse redevelopment project, working to secure $4.625 million in funding to date, with grants from both the Guilford County Commissioners and the Greensboro City Council and money from the Cemala Foundation and the Golden LEAF Foundation to name a few. Hazlett recently told TBJ that Nussbaum has almost $100 million out in funding requests for the project.

“Lisa has played a critical role in the success of the Nussbaum Center in the last four and a half years,” Sam Funchess, CEO, said. “Lisa has been a leader since she joined the organization. She took on additional responsibilities earlier this year and has proven her effectiveness and qualifications.”

Hazlett takes over the role from Funchess, who stepped down as president when he was named vice president for investor relations at Guerrilla RF in January. Funchess remains CEO of Nussbaum.

“Her curiosity, experience and relationships in the community make her an outstanding choice for this role and a strong partner for our entrepreneurs,” Funchess said. “With over half of our associates being women-owned firms, her experience and voice will be critical to making sure we meet their needs as they grow their businesses and community.”

In this position, Hazlett is responsible for executing the overall strategy of the organization as well as day-to-day operations, including attracting and retaining associates and donors and identifying and developing new branding and marketing opportunities. She will also work with Funchess and Nussbaum’s board to develop and implement a strategic plan for the organization.

“Entrepreneurship has been the key growth economic driver in Greensboro and the Triad region,” Hazlett said. “In my new role, I will continue to apply a strategic, process-oriented approach to making our vision a reality – and supporting the future success of our region. I will continue to focus on building strategic relationships with key stakeholders and potential partners across the region.”

Prior to the Nussbaum Center, Hazlett spent over seven years in health care. She also has managed her own business as a professional singer and actress for almost 30 years.
