The Bay Area is home to some of the fastest growing companies across the Americas, according to a new report from the Financial Times.

More than four dozen Bay Area companies, both private and public, landed on the list which ranked 500 companies based on their revenue growth between 2018 and 2021.

The Business Times publishes our own list of fastest growing companies in the Bay Area below.

The Financial Times noted in its report that its fourth annual analysis spans a period that extends through two years of the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent recovery but stops before interest rates increased in 2022. Technology companies, which make up more than a quarter of the companies on the list, were also impacted by a broad downturn and mass layoffs last year.

One of the most notable companies on this year's list is Twitter, which was a public company until Elon Musk's messy purchase of the social media company for $44 billion in October.

Twitter landed at No. 456 on the Financial Times' rankings, with its revenue growing 67% to a little over $5 billion in 2021 from around $3 billion in 2018.

However, the company generated 89% of its revenue from advertising in 2021, according to its annual report for that year. Many large brands started pulling advertising dollars from Twitter amid Musk's takeover last year, and the company's revenue reportedly dropped 35% in the final quarter of 2022, according to The Information.

Another company on the list is Lyft, which landed at No. 483 for growing revenue 49% to $3.2 billion in 2021 from $2.2 billion in 2018. Its hometown rival, Uber, is not on the list — the company reported revenue of $5.8 billion in 2021, down from $11.3 billion in 2018, according to annual reports filed with the SEC.
