Andreessen Horowitz published its fourth annual ranking of the top 100 privately held consumer marketplaces across the world, and nearly two dozen Bay Area companies made the list, including the top spot.

Grocery delivery service Instacart was number one for the third year in a row. Ticket resale platform Viagogo climbed up to the third spot from sixth last year, and Turo slid down one spot to number five this year.

There were also several companies that appeared for the first time — which A16z dubs a "freshman" — including design and print shop Zazzle, home services and goods site Houzz, furniture market Chairish, vacation rental site RedAwning and local food market Locale.

A16z partnered with data research firm Consumer Edge to analyze gross merchandise value, which is the total amount of goods and services sold through a marketplace. The list also excludes public companies, as well as non-public companies that are majority owned by private equity firms.

Three Bay Area companies "graduated" from the list because they had public exits or were acquired: dog walking service Wag, car rental service Getaround and auto services market YourMechanic.

The venture capital firm also noted that online shopping is becoming more personalized and curated, and so-called live shopping — which combines video streaming with online shopping — might start becoming more popular in the U.S.

The fastest growing category was mental health followed by health and wellness, pets, tickets and transportation. The only category with declining growth was celebrity engagement, and Chicago-based Cameo is the only company listed in that category going back to 2020.

Here are all of the Bay Area companies that landed on A16z's top 100 consumer marketplaces of 2023, according to their ranking and movement compared to last year. An asterisk indicates this is the first year a company appeared on the list.
