Sacramento-based smart security company Rhombus Inc. has opened an office in Charlotte, North Carolina, to support its customers on the East Coast.

Since 2016, Rhombus has offered wireless and artificial intelligence-enabled video surveillance cameras that can track movement, identify faces and count pedestrian traffic, all of which can be monitored remotely.

"The Charlotte office offers us faster turnaround times for our customers, and we will be more available on their schedules,” said Sarah Lathe, marketing manager with Rhombus.

Rhombus has its headquarters in two offices in Midtown Sacramento, where most of its 175 employees work, she said.

While Rhombus is expanding with its East Coast support office, the company is committed to Sacramento, Lathe said.

“Our roots are in Sacramento,” Lathe said. “The founders want to take the company public and help put Sacramento on the map for tech.”

Over the years, Rhombus has added additional cloud-based features, including sophisticated audio surveillance that can identify keywords, noise levels and specific sounds, such as gunshots, sirens or breaking glass. Last year, it added technology-enabled door-access sensors to its suite of cameras and audio offerings.

Rhombus does its own engineering, and it designs its own software and firmware. The actual hardware is contract manufactured abroad.

The company offers its clients a cloud-based dashboard they can use to monitor their physical locations, and that dashboard can be monitored anywhere via a computer or smartphone. The service is available around the clock.

The new Charlotte customer support office has three employees now and will expand to about 10 by the end of the year, Lathe said.

Rhombus has a mix of fully remote, hybrid and full-time in-office employees. Most of the hardware and technology team, as well as the marketing and sales teams, work in the office full-time.

In October 2021, Rhombus raised a $10 million funding round led by Cota Capital, along with investors MSD Partners, Lemnos and Promus Ventures. That round brought the company to $20 million raised.
