Sacramento-based smart security company Rhombus Inc. is adding a line of technology-enabled door access sensors to its offering of security cameras, sensors and microphones.

The new products include badge sensors and readers that can use access cards, mobile apps, motion and remote messaging to allow access to buildings.

"It's a completely different product line," said Jordan Shou, director of marketing with Rhombus.

The new products include badge sensors, and badge sensors with cameras that can operate a locking mechanism remotely.

The software powering the camera reader can also spot if the wrong person is using a photo badge, and the system can monitor in real time if another person tailgates an approved person through a door, Shou said.

Like its other products, the new access control devices can be accessed via the cloud so they can be monitored and searched with a computer or smartphone.

The new product also allows customers to integrate security, alarms and access control in one system, Shou said. And the company's existing cameras and microphones can be set up to monitor access points.

When a door unlocks, for example, that access is automatically indexed and paired with corresponding security video footage. That allows customers to investigate in real time if they get notified that someone's face doesn't match their badge.

"It can all be managed by one dashboard," Shou said, adding that access security monitoring was something customers were asking for.

Rhombus is based near Midtown Sacramento, where most of its 150 employees work. The company does its own engineering, and it designs its own software and firmware. The actual hardware is contract manufactured abroad.

Since launching in 2016, Rhombus has offered wireless and artificial intelligence-enabled video surveillance cameras that can track movement, identify faces and count pedestrian traffic, all of which can be monitored remotely.

In June last year, the company added sophisticated audio surveillance that can identify keywords, noise levels and specific sounds, such as gunshots, sirens or breaking glass.

In October 2021, Rhombus raised a $10 million funding round led by Cota Capital, along with investors MSD Partners, Lemnos and Promus Ventures. That round brought the company to $20 million raised.
