Sacramento-based smart security camera company Rhombus Systems Inc. has signed a lease that more than doubles its space near Midtown Sacramento in a second building.

Rhombus is taking 18,000 square feet in a building formerly occupied by an architecture firm on 19th Street, and it is keeping its existing 14,000-square-foot building on 20th Street, literally just across the railroad tracks.

“We’ve grown quite a bit. We had 50 people a year ago, and we have about 100 today, and we plan to be at 140 by the end of the year,” CEO Garrett Larsson told the Business Journal.

Rhombus plans to move into the space at 1919 19th St. after a few months of tenant improvements, he said. The new space will become the company's primary office, and the existing office will become auxiliary space.

The office at 1919 19th St. had previously been home to Sacramento architecture firm Lionakis.

“It’s a really nice space. It has that San Francisco warehouse vibe, and it has great lighting,” Larsson said, adding that the interesting-looking space could help with recruiting tech employees.

About 70% of Rhombus employees still come into the office to work on software and hardware development, with the notable exception of those who work out of state, Larsson said.

He said the company still plans to expand its employee footprint in Sacramento to grow the local tech economy.

Since launching, Rhombus has offered wireless and artificial intelligence-enabled video surveillance cameras that can track movement, identify faces and count pedestrian traffic, all of which can be monitored remotely by computer or smartphone.

In June, the company added sophisticated audio surveillance that can identify keywords, noise levels and specific sounds, such as gunshots, sirens or breaking glass.

In October, Rhombus raised a $10 million funding round led by Cota Capital, along with investors MSD Partners, Lemnos and Promus Ventures. That round brought the company to $20 million raised.
