A new proposal in Metro Air Park is meant to address a current need, but might also meet a future one.

About 12.5 acres at 4235 Meister Way would become a truck parking site, but with charging stations added over time to accommodate the expected rise of electric trucks.

"It's going to be an untapped market, so we're hoping to build on that," said Suki Thind, one of the partners in SGT Group Holdings, the project's developer.

Thind said his group has submitted initial plans for Metro eTruck Park to Sacramento County, and he's hoping to start construction as soon as they're both approved and a needed extension of Meister Way is completed.

The truck yard would have 300 parking spaces as well as an 8,000-square-foot office, Thind said. SGT Group would partner with a solar/electric vehicle charging company to add solar panels above truck parking and build charging stations as electric trucks start appearing on the roads.

As soon as 2035, he said, electric truck chargers could make up the entire park, reducing its emissions to zero. He noted that most electric vehicle charging stations now are in shopping center parking lots, gas stations or public facilities where long-haul trucks would have difficulty charging.

"We plan to cater to electric trucks," he said, adding momentum will build once a trucking company commits to trucks that run on electricity.

SGT Group selected the site because it's close to industry, with several active warehouse and distribution centers nearby. It's also close to both Interstate 5 and Highway 99, busy corridors for truck traffic.

The project is still in planning stages and will evolve, he said, adding a project cost is still being determined. "A lot is going to depend on how fast we move to electric trucks," he said.

Real estate data service Reonomy shows SGT Group acquired land for the future truck yard in two separate transactions, including a quit claim deed, in 2018 and 2019. The buyer paid $220,000 in the other transaction.
