DataShapes, a signals and waveforms intelligence company, is adding AI to its name just a couple months after relocating to Charlottesville.

The company develops AI-powered software for deployable devices, including in the sea and in space, that can unlock intelligence from signals and waveforms. It says its software can provide immediate information to companies that are protecting and maintaining essential infrastructure. Along with defense organizations, the company’s technology is also useful in industries like telecommunications.

Moving forward, the company will be called DataShapes AI.

Co-founder, president and CEO Logan Selby relocated the company from San Francisco to the UVA North Fork Research Park near the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport earlier this year to facilitate the company’s focus on electronic warfare and intelligence work for U.S. government and defense organizations.

Selby told me in an email in February “only a few individuals” made the move to Charlottesville and that some talent has remained remote.

“We see Charlottesville as a strategic location for our growth trajectory,” he wrote. “The city's innovative spirit and access to top talent were key factors in our decision to relocate.”

Selby had a short tenure at Charlottesville's National Ground Intelligence Center in 2020, the same year he founded DataShapes AI.

The company on Tuesday also named Kevin Larrabee, formerly the chief data officer of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command Research and Development organization, as its head of product.
