Richmond-based user car giant CarMax Inc. (NYSE: KMX) has signed on to be the primary jersey sponsor for the reigning National Women’s Soccer League champions.

CarMax said Tuesday it will have its logo across the front of the NJ/NY Gotham FC jerseys beginning with the upcoming season in March. Terms of the multiyear deal were not disclosed. Jersey sponsorships in the NWSL can run as much as $2.5 million per season.

The Richmond company replaces cryptocurrency firm Algorand as the club’s primary jersey sponsor.

CarMax Chief Marketing Officer Sarah Lane said in a statement the deal reflects the company’s commitment to elevating, supporting and increasing exposure to women’s sports.

CarMax already has several longstanding sponsorship agreements with Gotham FC, including being presenting partner of the club’s regular season matches and its putting its name on the club’s Player of the Match designation. CarMax was also previously a sleeve sponsor on Gotham FC’s jerseys.

“The increased investment will help Gotham FC further engage the community in meaningful ways and provide greater access to the sport and to our matches,” Gotham FC Senior Vice President Nan Vogel said in a statement.

Gotham FC won the 2023 NWSL Championship in November with a 2-1 win over OL Reign in San Diego.

CarMax sold roughly 810,000 used vehicles across its fiscal year that ended Feb. 28, 2023. It also moved 590,000 wholesale vehicles at auctions. It has more than 240 stores and employs more than 30,000 associates across its ranks. It posted $31.9 billion in revenue across fiscal 2022.

Along with its headquarters in Manakin-Sabit, CarMax operates its Midtown Technology and Innovation Center at the Sauer Center on West Broad Street. It opened that facility in 2021 to support the company’s growth and digital innovation, hiring software engineers, technology analysts and more.
