Tempe-based Arkos Health plans to increase access to mental health services in several Arizona counties as part of a new partnership with California-based Wave Neuroscience.

Under the arrangement, Arkos will use Wave’s Braincare assessment tools and technology as part of its mobile behavioral health program, with efforts launching on May 2 in Maricopa, Pima, Pinal and Yuma counties. More counties and states will be added later, Arkos said.

Wave’s technology includes its Sonal device, which can be used at home and uses magnetic fields to affect brainwaves with a goal toward improved health and well-being. The company describes its treatment as an alternative to options such as drugs, special diets or exercise regimens. It takes a personalized approach that maps individuals’ brain functions and uses targeted stimulations to address their specific needs.

Arkos works with Medicaid beneficiaries in their homes, eliminating patient barriers such as lack of transportation to care facilities or inability to get time away from work.

“Depression, substance abuse, and PTSD are massive health issues in the populations we serve, and, when left unmanaged, cause poor outcomes and dramatic increases in health expenditures,” Dr. Amish Purohit, Arkos Health co-founder and president of population health services, said in a statement. “By including Wave Neuroscience’s technology with our mobile behavioral health program, we are engaging patients proactively in their homes with a multi-disciplinary approach and innovative technology that’s proven to have a positive impact on mental wellness leading to optimal physical health as well.”

Arkos said that participants in its programs show a 41% reduction in hospital readmission rates and a 64% reduction in emergency department readmission rates.

Wave CEO Fred Walke said working with Arkos furthers his company’s mission to provide its technology and services to more people.

“Wave Neuroscience is proud to partner with Arkos Health to bring our innovative, patented, and personalized resources to their Arizona Medicaid population,” Walke said in a statement. “While the foundation of our technology was developed for 'at-risk' clinical populations, this version has been widely adopted by high-performance organizations for the purpose of optimization and improved wellness.”
