Hawaiian Airlines has given a $100,000 grant to the University of Hawaii to create a scholarship for IT students, UH and Hawaiian announced Monday in a joint release.
The Hawaiian Airlines Information Technology Endowed Scholarship is for students enrolled in IT, computer science, cybersecurity and other computer technology programs at one of the UH System’s four-year universities.
“Hawaiian Airlines’ forward-thinking philanthropy will help build a pipeline of future employees through supporting students pursuing promising careers in information technology, computer science and cybersecurity,” said Tim Dolan, UH vice president of advancement and CEO of the University of Hawaii Foundation, in a statement. “We’re grateful such a prominent local company has the vision to create opportunities for students to grow with well-paying careers here in Hawaii.”
This marks the first time Hawaiian Airlines is funding a scholarship for UH, although the Honolulu-based airline has supported other UH programs, including athletics and an apprenticeship for aircraft mechanics. The airline also is one of the local employers involved in UH’s IT/Cyber Leap-Start Experience Excelerator Program, which launched last year to provide real-world experience for IT and cybersecurity students.
“Our kuleana includes cultivating talent from within the communities we serve – especially our Hawaii home,” stated John Jacobi, Hawaiian Airlines senior vice president and chief information officer. “We are proud to expand on our existing partnerships to provide even more opportunities for students to navigate pathways toward success.”
