For entrepreneurs, young startups and, increasingly, even large companies, coworking and shared office space has become a popular model. According to a 2017 Forbes article, the number of coworking spaces in the U.S. grew from just 14 in 2007 to over 11,000 last year. During that explosion of growth, Madison has seen a number of coworking spaces open for business.

Deciding if coworking is the right option for you, and if so which space to choose, can be daunting, so we took a look at Madison’s coworking offerings to sift through the important details. Below you’ll find some more information on each space, their hours, perks, rates and, in their own words, what they bring to the table.

100state -

  • Location: 316 W Washington Ave #675, Madison, WI 53703
  • Hours: 24/7 access for members
  • Cost: $150/month for a coworking membership, $275/month for a dedicated desk, private offices start at $500/month (1-8 person offices available).
  • Amenities: Fitness gym and shower rooms, free coffee, free beer, free printing/copying, phone booths, high speed wifi (average of 50 up / 50 down).

Brix & Mortar -

  • Location: 30 W Mifflin St, Madison, WI 53703
  • Hours: 24/7 access for members
  • Cost: $125/month for a coworking membership, $250/month for a dedicated desk, private offices available starting at $500/month (1-3 person offices available).
  • Amenities: Free coffee, tea and water, high speed wifi, free printing, phone booths, lockable storage units.
  • Sounding off: “Brix & Mortar Coworking is an inviting space I built with the needs of entrepreneurs and solo workers in mind. The atmosphere is bright and creative, as I’ve found colors can have a positive influence on how your mind works. The space is flexible enough to adapt to your growing business, allowing you to add employees and contractors to the workspace to help foster a stronger camaraderie.”

Horizon -

  • Location: 7 N Pinckney St #300, Madison, WI 53703
  • Hours: Mon-Fri 7am-6pm, 24/7 access available with certain memberships
  • Cost: $70/month for weekday coworking membership, $95/month for 24/7 access coworking, $250/month for a dedicated desk. Non-members can access the space for a daily rate of $20. Additionally, members can add access to Matrix Coworking for $20/month.
  • Amenities: Kitchenette, shower, ethernet and wifi via SupraNet Gigabit fiber.
  • Sounding off: “Our vibe is more library, less frat house. Horizon is a study hall for grownups, a place where people get to work and stay focused. We have a proven history connecting our members and startup teams to what their ventures need. Horizon helps you succeed.”

Industrious -

  • Location: 25 W. Main Street | 5th Floor, Madison, WI 53703
  • Hours: Mon-Fri 8:30am-5pm
  • Cost: $383/month for a dedicated desk, private offices start at $698/month
  • Amenities: Craft coffee, artisanal pastries, and fresh fruit served fresh daily, professional conference rooms, phone booths, mother’s room, ultra-fast internet, unlimited free printing.

  • Hours: 24/7 access for members
  • Cost: $65/month for coworking membership, $175/month for a dedicated desk
  • Amenities: 1 gigabit internet via ethernet and wifi, full size fridge, access to 6 conference rooms, free coffee, open device lab.
  • Sounding off: “We're a group of entrepreneurs, remote workers, freelancers and creators trying to make Madison a better place to work, live, and play.”

Matrix -

  • Location: 6302 Odana Rd, Madison, WI 53719
  • Hours: Mon-Fri 9am-5pm
  • Cost: $50/month coworking membership, $70/month for coworking membership at Matrix and Horizon Coworking
  • Amenities: Free room rental, mail service.
  • Sounding off: “Matrix caters to broad scope of business types that include, but are not limited to, tech or healthcare. This makes our coworking space a more comfortable place for entrepreneurs of varied disciplines like healer, musician, or artist (although we do have plenty of tech geeks, too). Plus, since Matrix is owned and run by a woman, it makes it easier for female entrepreneurs to feel at home.”

One-OneThousand -

  • Location: 78 N Bryan St, Madison, WI 53714
  • Hours: N/A
  • Cost: $75/month for access to the communal workshop space, private units available for $250-$300/month.
  • Amenities: A range of equipment for makers of home and lifestyle goods, including full process screen printing, fabric yardage printing table, rag rug loom, industrial sewing machine, steamer, home sewing machines, light table, stove, small product photography room, packaging area and upholstery tools.
  • Sounding off: “One-OneThousand’s vision is to build a community around handcrafted goods and the people who make them. One-OneThousand is a place where handmade artists, designers, craftsmen and hobbyists can hone their skills in studio spaces and equipment rooms, sell their goods in pop-up stores, even learn how to build a business. Synergy -

  • Hours: Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, Sat 10am-4pm
  • Cost: $100/month for coworking membership, $300/month for dedicated desk with 24/7 access, private offices start at $400/month. Synergy also offers a $30/month plan for individuals who want infrequent access, allowing them to use the coworking space once a week, and $10 day passes.
  • Amenities: Wifi, free coffee and tea, free car and bicycle parking, free printing.
