A Dayton-founded drone company hit a major milestone with a recent certification.
Innovative aviation company Drone Express is making headway on autonomous drone delivery thanks to a recent Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification. The company’s Part 135 application was recently accepted bringing Drone Express’ closer to becoming a fully certified Part 135 Unmanned Air Carrier.
Drone Express said the Part 135 certification is a rigorous process requiring demonstration of high levels of safety, reliability and compliance with FAA regulations.
“While unmanned systems are not a new thing, the certification of an unmanned airline is, and the FAA approached this with great enthusiasm and energy,” said Russell Kline, Drone Express chief regulatory officer. “We look forward to working with them as we complete our Part 135 certification in the coming months.”
Once fully certified, Drone Express will become one a select few companies authorized to operate unmanned aircraft for BVLOS (beyond-visual-line-of-sight) commercial delivery in the United States under the FAA's stringent guidelines.
Beth Flippo, Drone Express CEO, said drone delivery will transform the way goods are transported, offering significant benefits in terms of speed, cost-effectiveness and environmental impact. The recent approval brings the company one leap closer to its goal – to revolutionize delivery logistics through BVLOS deliveries using drones.
"We are thrilled to have reached this pivotal moment, which unlocks immense potential for the future…,” Flippo said. “With the FAA's approval, we are excited to embark on the next phase of our journey, bringing the future of delivery to communities across the country."
Although Drone Express moved its headquarters to Denver last year, the company maintains its Dayton office at 123 Webster St. The company continues to partner with entities like Winsupply, The Kroger Company, Papa John’s International and other retailers nationwide.
