Two Northeast Ohio research institutions and one company were approved Tuesday for nearly $1.7 million in Ohio Third Frontier grants to help them develop products and move them toward the marketplace.
"We are investing in promising research and innovation to build our economy and improve the quality of life for Ohioans," Gov. Mike DeWine said in a statement.
In all, 11 Ohio institutions and companies were awarded $3.6 million in Ohio Third Frontier grants on Tuesday.
"These technology startups are building the companies and jobs of tomorrow," said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development and chair of the Ohio Third Frontier Commission, which approved the grants on Tuesday.
The Ohio Third Frontier Technology Validation and Start-up Fund provides grants to Ohio research institutions to help advance technology projects toward commercialization. The fund also provides grants to Ohio companies aiming to license institution-owned technologies to accelerate their commercialization.
The Cleveland-area grant recipients are:
- Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, $1 million for its Technology Validation Start-up Fund.
- University Hospitals Health System Inc., Cleveland, $500,000 for its University Hospitals Ventures Fund.
- Zvelt Therapeutics, Cleveland, $150,000 to develop and commercialize a platform technology that will focus on rare metabolic syndromes with high disease burdens.
