CareerBuilder Acquires an Employee Benefits Startup as it Expands Beyond Recruitment

CareerBuilder, long known as a job board and online recruitment platform, has spent the last couple years transitioning into a more comprehensive software provider that meets a range of company HR needs. And it just acquired a 10-year-old cloud-based employee benefits company to give employers even more resources to manage human capital.

Chicago-based CareerBuilder announced Tuesday that it has acquired Workterra, a Pleasanton, CA-based benefits administration and talent management software company. Founded in 2006, Workterra helps manage the employee lifecycle and helps companies with benefit administration, benefit enrollment, and Affordable Care Act compliance. Workterra says more than 600,000 employees are on its system.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

For CareerBuilder, the Workterra acquisition further expands the company beyond recruitment, and it adds another post-hire service as CareerBuilder evolves into a "full-fledged human capital management company." Earlier this year CareerBuilder acquired Aurico, an Arlington Heights provider of background screenings and drug-testing services. And in June of last year it launched CareerBuilder1, the company's pre-hire platform and HR software solution that delivers job distribution, sourcing, workflow, CRM, data and analytics.

CareerBuilder says customers can buy its whole suite of HR services or purchase solutions a la carte.

“CareerBuilder has reinvented who we are as a company over the last few years,” Matt Ferguson, CEO of CareerBuilder, said in a statement. “This acquisition is a defining moment because it enables us to step beyond recruitment and become an end-to-end human capital management firm. WORKTERRA is a fast-moving, fast-growing company with deep functionality built from the ground up. Working together, we will bring an unprecedented scope of innovation to market that will solve critical issues clients face in hiring, developing and managing employees.”
