VC funding update: Boston startups and tech firms raised nearly $2B in July

What summer lull? A collection of Boston-area venture and debt investments in startups, tech companies and related innovators pulled in nearly $2B during the month of July.

Software companies collectively raised $526.5M, based on the roundup below. Not including IPOs, the largest of those raises was the $300M funding round by DataRobot, which has its eye on the public markets. Biotech companies, for their part, brought in $574M, and the largest of those deals came from Deep Genomics, a startup applying AI to drug development, which raised a $180M round led by SoftBank.

A handful of IPOs, venture capital funds and government grants are also listed below and not included in the total.

Software

Boston-based DataRobot raised a $300M venture capital funding round that brings the company's post-money valuation to $6.3B.

Embark Veterinary Inc., a Boston-based company that sells home dog DNA testing kits, raised $75M from nine investors. 

LinkSquares, an AI-powered contract lifecycle management and analysis company, raised $40M in Series B financing led by Sorenson Capital. The funding will go to expanding the LinkSquares team, advancing technology and developing new business partnerships.

Plannuh, a Newton-based provider of cloud-based software for building and managing marketing plans and budgets, raised just over $4M in equity as part of an offering worth about $5M.

Cambridge-based Julia Computing announced a $24M Series A round led by Dorilton Ventures, with participation from Menlo Ventures, General Catalyst and HighSage Ventures.

Anyline, an AI data capture company, raised $20M in a growth funding round led by European growth equity fund Digital+ Partners. The funding will go to increasing the company's mobile scanning technology.

Silk, a data performance company, completed its Series B funding round of $55M. The round was led by S Capital with participation from existing investors, including Sequoia Capital, Pitango, Globespan, Ibex and Vintage. The funding will aid Silk in accelerating its sales and marketing efforts and expand engineering development.

Aliaswire, a Burlington-based digital payment and credit company, raised $6M in new funding. The round was led by Stage 1 Ventures and will go to company expansion and hiring in the areas of product engineering, customer care, account management, and business development.

Boston-based Gamalon Inc., which is developing an AI-powered chatbot, raised $1.5M in a debt offering worth $3M.

Cambridge-based Compt Inc., which helps HR build, manage, and streamline perk stipend programs, raised $1M in equity from 10 investors.

Biotech

Deep Genomics, a startup applying AI to drug development, raised a $180M round led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2

Biotech company Endlyz Therapeutics Inc., which is based at healthcare fund manager SV Health Investors in Boston, raised $3.25M as part of an offering worth $6.5M.

Noetic Cyber, a cloud-based continuous cyber asset management and controls platform, launched with a total of $20M in funding, including a new Series A round led by Energy Impact Partners, with participation from existing seed investors TenEleven Ventures and Glasswing Ventures. 

Cambridge-based Verve Inc., which commercializes a lightweight wearable device to protect workers, raised $15M in equity from 13 investors.

Genomics testing firm Sophia Genetics went public, raising $234M in its IPO.

VitriVax, a vaccine developer, closed its first institutional financing round, led by Adjuvant Capital. Terms weren't disclosed.

Medford-based Travera Inc. raised $4M in equity from two investors to develop a technology to measure which cancer drugs work against each individual’s unique cancer cells.

Neurogastrx Inc., a Woburn-based specialty pharmaceutical company developing therapies is for gastrointestinal disorders, raised $60M in equity from 10 investors.

Aliada Therapeutics Inc., a Boston-based biotech company incorporated this year, raised $1M in debt from two investors.

Cambridge-based Suono Bio Inc. raised $12.2M from 11 investors as part of an equity offering worth approximately $15.2M.

Digital health company Linus Health Inc. raised $44M as part of an equity offering worth approximately $55M.

Pirouette Medical Inc., which is developing an epinephrine auto-injector used for the emergency treatment of severe allergic reactions, raised $1M of a total planned fund-raise of $1.25M.

Cannabis

C3 Industries, a multi-state, vertically integrated cannabis company, raised $25M in capital led by existing investor Madison Square Park Capital.

Sales and Marketing

OneScreen.ai, an out-of-home (OOH) advertising startup, raised $1M in pre-seed funding led by TechFarms Capital with participation from HubSpot co-founders Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah.

Boston-based sales and marketing analytics company InsightSquared Inc. raised $4M in debt and other securities.

Cleantech & Greentech

Phoenix Tailings Inc. raised just over $12M in equity from 47 investors. The Woburn-based company is developing new ways to recycle mining and refining waste.

Somerville-based Form Energy Inc., which is developing new energy storage systems seeking to enable a fully-renewable electric grid, has raised just over $155M as part of an equity offering worth about $200M.

Telecom

Nano-C, a Westwood-based supplier of carbon nanotubes and other materials for electronics and semiconductors, raised just over $5M in debt and other securities from 74 investors.

Blues Wireless, a cellular equipment company, raised $22M in Series A funding led by Sequoia Capital and Lachy Groom, along with XYZ Venture Capital and returning investor Bill Gates. 

Funds

Elephant Partners, a VC firm started by one of the co-founders of Warby Parker, raised a fourth fund of $600M. 

Ecosystem supporters

The Baker-Polito Administration and the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) announced over $18M in capital funding will be used to support 14 projects by advancing life sciences R&D, innovations in therapeutic delivery and data science.

MassDevelopment has provided a $1M from its Emerging Technology Fund to Intigua Inc., which does business as JetPatch, an R&D company to help the Boston-based company hire additional employees that can support its growth momentum.
