Boston's only purveyor of custom skis, Parlor Skis, is opening shop on Newbury Street this Friday. It's part of a monthlong "Block Party" hosted by investment and management company Jamestown that will also include Island Creek Oysters, New England Outerwear and running apparel startup Janji.
"We are really excited to be going to Newbury Street for the holiday," Parlor Founder Mark Wallace told em. "We are bringing a lot of the elements of our fit studio in East Boston down town. We are going to be doing fittings, creating a bit of an aprčs vibe with some other ski brands, and brining a local manufacturing company to Newbury."
Parlor Skis was founded by Williams College grads Wallace, Pete Endres and Jason Epstein in a former funeral parlor in Cambridge (hence the name). Now it has a shop in East Boston where the guys fabricate high performance custom skis for individuals as well as corporate clients, including Narragansett Beer.
And business is booming, Wallace said; right now, they're cranking out as many as 10 pairs of skis each week.
Like I've said before, those frequenting Newbury Street are slowly eschewing high fashion – more and more, it's becoming a bastion for the young professional instead. Quality apparel company Woolrich Inc. just moved in, for example, as did suiting company Indochino, joining the ranks of Frank and Oak, Ministry of Supply and Ball and Buck, among others.
The addition of these four brands should be a welcome one. Pop in and say hello; you'll be glad you did.
"It will be a great chance to connect with our customers downtown," said Wallace.
