Boston Download: Red Sox Hire New President of Baseball Operations

Red Sox Hire New President of Baseball Operations

The Boston Red Sox have hired a new president of baseball operations in Dave Dombrowski, 59. According to NESN:

“I have known Dave very well for a long time,” said owner John Henry. “Tom [Werner] and I have no doubts that Dave is the right person to strengthen our baseball operations group going forward. He is one of the most highly regarded executives in all of baseball and had options to go with other clubs. We feel very fortunate that he wanted to come to Boston and wanted to further his career — now with the Red Sox — as one of the great architects of winning baseball clubs.”

Gov. Charlie Baker Releases Independent Boston 2024 Report by The Brattle Group

On Tuesday morning, in the wake of the death of Boston's potential Olympic bid, Gov. Charlie Baker released a report commissioned by independent organization The Brattle Group. The report was intended to discern the feasibility, or lack thereof, of Boston playing host to the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. But seeing as how the USOC opted out of Boston, the report now provides retrospective insight into whether or not advocacy group Boston 2024 was honest and accurate in its portrayal of the bid to the general public.

For one, it determined all financial risk would be placed on the taxpayers of Massachusetts, which Boston 2024 contended otherwise. – Nick DeLuca

Starbucks Puts Real Pumpkin in the PSL in Response to Consumer Pressure

Another win for the Food Babe army...or, almost. Starbucks has announced that the beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte, a.k.a. “PSL,”—established in 2003 — will now include real pumpkin and without caramel coloring. And while the company hasn't specifically credited Vani Hari—a.k.a. the Food Babe—for the change, the blogger called out the drink in a post last year, taking issue with the drink’s caramel coloring and high sugar content, as well as lack of actual pumpkin. Meanwhile, Yvette d'Entremont, now primarily known as her skeptical blogger alter ego Science Babe, has taken to challenging some of Hari’s pseudoscientific claims. In a Gawker article earlier this summer, D'Entremont — who grew up in the Bay State — said: “Don't fuck with a Bostonian's Pumpkin-Spice Anything," debunking Hari's claims about the beverage. But Starbucks did mess with the recipe, and its new ingredient list does include trace amounts of pumpkin. Not Food Babe approved, though, it seems:  “I still won’t be consuming it!” she says. — Washington Post

Refurbishing Winthrop Lane Would Help Enliven Downtown Boston

Refurbishing Winthrop Lane without jeopardizing the Boston Bricks would dually benefit the space itself and passersby. For those who don't take the time to glance downward while making their way through, failing to notice Boston's pivotal moments captured in bronze, Winthrop Lane is nothing but an extension of the sidewalk anchored on the Otis Street end by a tired newsstand and Dunkin' Donuts kiosk. >>> Read more on BostInno – Nick DeLuca

Red Bull High Stakes Brings a New Dimension to Rowing on the Charles River

Red Bull High Stakes brings 16 teams of world class rowers to the Riverside Boat Club on the Charles River for an a single-elimination relay tournament that will try to bring rowing to a mainstream audience. The Big One: Goodbye to Boston's 'Innovation District'

As much as Boston's "Innovation District" is counted a success today, the seeds are already in the ground for an innovation district to come up from grass roots, without any ribbon-cutting. And then who's going to want to work in the Seaport? >>> Read more on BostInno – Galen Moore
