Fortified Bicycle has already made a name for itself. In actually being able to produce seemingly indestructible bike lights that "last forever," the locally born company founded by "MIT bike geeks" has found steady demand. In an era when cities are trying to become more bike-friendly, providing thief-proof equipment is a popular market.
Of course, now Fortified is about to embark on two major developments that will fundamentally move the company forward. The first will be a move into a new office.
Fortified co-founder Tivan Amour explained that the new office will also serve as a biking center, where they intend to host events. Mostly, he's just happy to finally have a full space that Fortified can call its own.
"Especially because we've got all this hardware just kind of sitting around everywhere," Amour said. "It's hard to be in someone else's space when you've got a lot of your own stuff."
Amour is happy with how Fortified will fill the new office, considering how busy they're being kept.
"We've got business on the west coast, on the east and everywhere in between."
Of course, the main project that Fortified is occupied with at the moment is far more ambitious than anything they've ever attempted before. After successful forays into the world of bicycle accessories, Amour and Fortified are eyeing the production of a bike itself.
"We're actually all about expanding our product line. That's our primary focus right now. Without getting too far into the details, we're launching the ultimate urban bicycle."
And Amour, true to his word, would not divulge specifics about what will make it "ultimate," other than that it will be as durable as any of their other products.
"Our vision always had a bike in it," said Amour. "We just weren't sure exactly when. And kind of everything came together at the right time."
Noting that "things are moving really nicely," he said that Fortified is looking to potentially launch the bike this fall. One particular detail he mentioned was that the company is currently testing it around Boston. Only they're careful to keep it a secret.
So if you happen to be walking a deserted street at some point in the next few weeks and spot a futuristic looking bike, just know that it could very well be a Fortified prototype. Only don't get too confident that that will happen. Amour seems to think it's pretty unlikely.
"There are a lot of streets that people don't walk on a lot in Boston."
