John Hancock Considers a New Landmark Building in the Back Bay

The John Hancock tower is officially known as 200 Clarendon because the insurance giant of the same name is no longer occupying space in the building. To that end, John Hancock is considering building a new complex in the Back Bay that while shorter than its former location, the tallest in Boston, would constitute 625,000-square feet and rise 26 stories – Boston Globe

MIT & Google Researchers Develop An Algorithm for Taking Better Photos Through Reflections

If you've ever attempted to snap a photo through a window, you know the final image never quite looks album-worthy, mainly due to all the reflections and other obstructions. But fortunately, MIT and Google researchers have figured out a method for automatically eliminating them. And those researchers—Tianfan XueMichael Rubinstein, Ce Liu and William T. Freeman—will present these findings at Siggraph 2015 later in August, according to TechCrunch. They'll also be demonstrating how you can film a short video on your smartphone and use their algorithms to remove rain drops, fences and reflections from a final image. How? Because the algorithm can distinguish what's part of the background from what's in the foreground. – TechCrunch

Ballot Initiative to Regulate Recreational Marijuana to be Filed Wednesday

At 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol will file a ballot initiative with the office of Attorney General Maura Healey to regulate recreational marijuana much like the government does with alcohol. According to the organization, the legislation is intended to:

  • Allow adults 21 and older to possess up to one ounce of marijuana and grow a limited number of marijuana plants in their homes, similar to home-brewing;
  • create a tightly regulated system of licensed marijuana retail outlets, cultivation facilities, product manufacturing facilities, and testing facilities, which will be overseen by a commission similar to the Alcohol Beverage Control Commission (ABCC);
  • provide local governments with the authority to regulate and limit the number of marijuana establishments in their city or town; and
  • create a 3.75% state excise tax on retail marijuana sales (in addition to the standard state sales tax) and allow local governments to establish an additional local sales tax of up to 2%. [Medical marijuana will NOT be subject to these additional taxes.] – Nick DeLuca
An MIT & Harvard Grad Invented a Nutrition Bar to Relieve Nausea

The idea for the patent-pending bar came about when MIT Sloan alum Neheet Trivedi’s sister became pregnant with her first child, and began experiencing extreme morning sickness. Her symptoms were so bad that she was unable to go to work, and eventually lost her job. Trivedi, who says he has always been passionate about and interested in food supply, agriculture and sustainability, knew there has to be a way to address this through nutrition. After meeting with a number of researchers and experts, he founded Real Food Solutions in June 2014. >>> Read more on BostInno – Rebecca Strong

According to numbers released in May by the nonprofit, Boston Harbor beaches were some of the cleanest public waterways in the country. The NFL's Harsh System Only Underlines Belichick's Impressive Run

n a single offseason, Belichick and the Patriots watched the potent cornerback duo of Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner leave town, along with defensive tackle Vince Wilfork (among several other notable exits). The tectonic shift of cornerback talent was especially profound, given that Revis, a main fixture in New England's defense during the Super Bowl run, went back to the Patriots' rival, the New York Jets (where he began his NFL career). >>> Read more on BostInno – Hayden Bird

The Future of Bike Building Could Be in 3D Printing

But with knowledge gained on best 3D printing practices in the last few years alone, and the foresight to determine how best to chart a future course for printing innovations, anyone – not just designers or engineers – can build items (including bikes) that are lightweight and efficient. >>> Read more on BostInno – Nick DeLuca
