UMass Lowell is gearing up to showcase their newest business development project, a new Innovation Hub and expansion of the established Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2). The launch begins Tuesday, June 9, with a first-look event for higher-education and business community members.
Located at 110 Canal St. in Lowell's up-and-coming Hamilton Canal District, the entrepreneurial center boasts 22,000 total square feet over two floors of the refurbished Freudenberg Nonwovens mill. Inside, co-working space is balanced with research sectors to allow for start-ups and ventures to test and develop products as well as nurture their fledgling businesses through the guidance of on-site expert assistance.
The Innovation Hub is a collaborative project between the University and Trinity Financial Services, the real estate investment firm spearheading the Canal District revitalization. The partnership allows students to foster professional relationship with potential investors in the area through Trinity's financial expertise and connections. The strategic location of the incubator will also allow small businesses to become keystones in the new, lively district.
M2D2, meanwhile, is an established, successful UMass Lowell program, which will be able to offer its services to more medical device and biotech start-ups with the new space. M2D2 is currently home to several burgeoning tech companies such as Lucifics, which is developing light-therapy delivery solutions for cancer patients.
Tonight's event will include remarks from UMass Lowell Chancellor Marty Meehan and Executive Vice Chancellor Jaqueline Moloney, along with tours of the new space. The event is not open to the public.
