FundingFest: These Boston Startups Raised Millions Last Week (2/2-2/6)

Startups in a wide range of industries —from photo technology to semiconductors—announced new funding last week.

Perhaps one of the most eye-opening deals came from nToggle, which we recently listed as one of the top startups in stealth mode to watch. Last week, the company—launched by former Jumptap chief product officer Adam Soroca—announced it had raised a $5.6 million Series A round from two VC firms and a number of angel investors. Those investors are Boston-based Sigma Prime, represented by John Simon, and Bessemer Venture Partners, represented by Kent Bennett. Boston angels invested in nToggle include Mike Baker of DataXu and Ric Calvillo of Nanigans.

“Unlike other platforms, nToggle doesn’t compete with programmatic buyers and sellers,” said Sigma Prime Ventures Managing Director John Simon in a press release. “We immediately jumped at this deal because the team’s ambition is to help all programmatic advertising technology companies generate stronger programmatic ROI faster.”

Meanwhile, 11 months after raising a Series A round, freelance consulting marketplace startup HourlyNerd disclosed it now has banked $7.8 million in Series B funding. The round was led by Highland Capital Partners, with participation from GE Ventures, Greylock Partners, Intuit founder Scott Cook, the Kraft Group, angel investor Semil Shah, former Etsy CEO Maria Thomas, Rent the Runway Founder/CEO Jennifer Hyman and Boston VC Suffolk Equity Partners. Co-founder and co-CEO Rob Biederman said in a news release that the consulting platform is becoming "the global spot market for business talent,” and already, the site features more than 10,000 consultants.
