Fun fact: Three of the five local tech companies that went public this year had hauled in $100 million or more in venture capital funding in the years that led up to ringing the opening bell.
It’s not a coincidence. For those just tuning in: IPO-bound companies often raise large VC funding rounds to charge hard after their opportunities—often deploying the money for major hiring in sales and product development.
As for the companies that went public this year with at least $100 million in investment, you may know their names already at this point—Care.com, Wayfair and HubSpot.
A number of local software and hardware companies with nine figures worth of funding have lined up to be next.
See below for the list of the eight companies (and another four that are close behind them), based on our own research.
Note: It's worth mentioning that raising a lot of VC funding doesn't say much on its own. It certainly doesn’t automatically tell you whether the company has actually got a real business going. And there are some great examples—actually, Wayfair is a chief one—of tech companies growing to a substantial size with little funding, or even no funding at all (see my BBJ post from a year ago on the subject).
Note #2: I’ve excluded any companies where it’s not clear that their latest rounds were “up” rounds (in which their valuation increased).
Here are the current members of Boston's $100 million club. Click the "latest round" year link to check out our coverage of their most recent VC funding round.
