Boston-born alcohol delivery service Drizly had some Election Day fun — much more fun than Martha Coakley.
Drizly offered free delivery Tuesday to help customers power through what proved to be a long night of close-calls and near-victories. While watching election results, Democrats could enter "BLUE" at checkout; Republicans, "RED"; and Independent, unenrolled or third parties, "PEROT."
Although a perk for users who enjoy receiving their beer, wine or liquor on their doorstep at no delivery cost to them, the promotion worked for Drizly, as well. Michael DiLorenzo, the startup's senior vice president of marketing, told BostInno that Drizly set a record for order demand on a Tuesday — a roughly 100 percent increase over the last month's average Tuesday.
The lucrative night came mere days after Drizly set a single-day record Friday with order demand 56 percent higher than the previous record set earlier this fall. And the good luck carried itself into the rest of Halloween week: Orders were 48 percent greater than Drizly's prior weekly record.
But who helped fuel Tuesday's Election Day jump? Unsurprisingly, Democrats. (They did lose the senate, too, after all.)
Drizly shared the breakdown of which party in Massachusetts used its redemption code the most. According to Drizly, here's how the redemptions tallied up in the Bay State:
- Democrats: 56 percent
- Republicans: 16 percent
- Independent: 28 percent
Of course, Massachusetts is historically a blue state regardless and, because this is user-generated data, it's not necessarily representative of the state's polling preferences. That said, Democrats still had a lot of wallowing to do.
Perhaps champagne orders will jump Wednesday now that Republicans have so much celebrating to do.
