Student-made app Tackboard takes on top social networks

Tackboard is the latest social media platform to emerge from a Boston-area dorm room. Just launched today in Apple's App Store, Tackboard is the brainchild of Northeastern University undergrad Gavin King and is supported by IDEA, Northeastern's student-run venture accelerator.

According to IDEA's website:

Tackboard is a social network that naturalizes the way people share experiences by mimicking real-world interaction. The app allows a group of users to build a collaborative board of visual content, translating their lives into a single collective, contextual story rather than scattered fragments across multiple services.

After downloading the app and signing up, you can follow your friends from Facebook, create a Tackboard or two, and invite your friends to collaborate. The app perfectly lends itself as a travel momento - something like an interactive scrapbook for a family vacation or road trip. By using Tackboard during your crazy night out on the Hill, you've eliminated the need to check the profiles of all the friends you went out with in order to put together the pieces of the night before. Want to share your latest creative pieces with a group of like-minded friends and get real-time feedback? Tackboard can lend itself as the perfect solution for this, and so many more situations.

King's vision for his app is to fill the currently unoccupied niche of a social network that is both public and highly collaborative. He believes that while personal messaging options like iMessages and WhatsApp can be very collaborative, there is collaborative social network option that is as public as Facebook or Instagram. Tackboard combines collaboration and public sharing to create a space where you can share with your friends and encounter neat geo-tagged projects from people around the world.

As a former co-op at Boston start-up FitnessKeeper, Inc. as well as Vimeo and Intuit, King has the experience with computer science and user interface design needed for a truly successful social network.
